Following Scientology’s failed bid for a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to be implemented, banning protesting outside Saint Hill, Mid-Sussex District Council has notified protestors of its intent to engage in ad-hoc spot checks throughout the IAS event in 2025.
In an email to the organisers in October 2025, the Council wrote:
“I am writing to inform you that, following Cabinet’s decision on 30 June 2025 not to issue a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for the Saint Hill Manor area, this Council will be conducting limited spot checks during the forthcoming IAS event, once the dates are announced. The purpose of these checks is to ensure that no party involved in the event causes alarm, harassment, or distress to others.”
“The spot checks will be undertaken by officers from the Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team, acting as independent observers. These will be brief, unannounced visual checks from the public highway focusing on the behaviour of both event attendees and protesters outside the site. Officers will not gather personal information, record evidence, or intervene in the event itself.”
“If any concerns are observed, they will be referred to the appropriate statutory authority (for example, Sussex Police, Highways, Planning or Environmental Health).”
“The Council values your cooperation and understanding in maintaining a peaceful and lawful environment during the event.”
Protestors wishing to join this year’s demonstration are reminded of the Voluntary Code of Conduct, and asked to engage only in peaceful protest. Anybody found to be harassing attendees, using threatening language or engaging in anti-social behaviour will be asked to leave.
Thank you.
