TfL’s decision to allow Scientology to advertise on the London Underground not only enable, but actively promote abuse. For survivors of abuse inside this and other coercive groups, this sets a dangers precedent for cults in the United Kingdom.
Although the Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that limited rooms in Scientology’s buildings are considered “places of worship” for the purposes of religious wedding ceremonies, it did not overturn the 1984 High Court case in which Lord Justice Latey ruled “Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious.. It is corrupt, sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has as its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard.. It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably, and to those who criticise or oppose it.” and that “It is dangerous because it is out to capture people, especially children and impressionable young people, and indoctrinate and brainwash them so that they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living and relationships with others“.
In 1971, the government commissioned an inquiry into Scientology’s practices, with Sir John Foster, concluding the organisation’s practices raise serious concerns, especially with regard to the mental health of vulnerable parishioners. The findings of this inquiry have never been disputed or overturned by the government, and in 2023 the Charity Commission reaffirmed it’s position that the Church of Scientology does not benefit the public.
These adverts cause serious offence to victims of abuse in Scientology and other cultic groups and should be removed, or at the very least, be accompanied with a disclaimer or advice on how to contact mental health services for those affected.
